Prospect

  • Definition: A known contact with basic information but not yet engaged meaningfully.
  • What It Means in Practice: We have the details of this contact, but they haven’t been qualified or nurtured.
  • Who Owns This Stage: Marketing

Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL)

  • Definition: A lead that has shown interest and fits our target persona. Ready for deeper marketing engagement.

  • Who Owns This Stage: Marketing

Sales Qualified Lead (SQL)

  • Definition: A lead that meets defined criteria for sales outreach and has shown buying intent.
  • What It Means in Practice: Filled out a form: to book a meeting with sales or schedule a demo Warm lead from an event like ISE Scheduled a meeting with Sales via their Hubspot calendar link
  • Who Owns This Stage: Sales

Opportunity

  • Definition: A contact (and associated company) that has a deal in the pipeline .
  • What It Means in Practice: Sales is actively working on a potential conversion.
  • Who Owns This Stage: Sales

Customer

  • Definition: A contact who has signed a deal and there is a closed won project.
  • What It Means in Practice: Converted and onboarded.
  • Who Owns This Stage: Customer Success / Sales

*Note: if it’s a current customer with a new project, then the lifecycle stage remains Customer but you need to add in the Deal type= Upsell
